Visual Artist

 Education: 

Studied ceramics at Northern Arizona University and Arizona State University.  Studied painting, sculpture and photography at the University of Texas at Austin, awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art in 1991.

2018 – “Dulce Bytes” – Invitational exhibit of digital art at the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center, Kerrville, Texas, February 1-25.

2017 – “A Natural Selection” – Solo exhibition at the Dougherty Arts Center in Austin, October 28, 2017 through January 8, 2018.

2017 – “Fragments & Fusion” – Two-person collage themed exhibition at the Old Bakery & Emporium gallery in Austin, March 2 through April 5.

2017 – “People’s Gallery 2017 Exhibition” – Juried exhibition at City Hall in Austin, February 2017 through January 2018.

2016 – “East Austin Studio Tour” – Invitational exhibit at Conscious Creative Hub in Austin, November 12-20.  Participated as a member of the Revisionist artist group.

2016 – “Unlimited” – Invitational exhibit at Texas Arthouse Gallery in Johnson City, Texas, June 25 to August 21.  This was the gallery’s inaugural exhibition.

2016 – “West Austin Studio Tour” – Juried group show at The Linc pop-up gallery space in Austin, May 14-22.  Participated as a member of The Linc Collective artist group.

2016 – “ATX Month of Love” – Invitational exhibit of Artist INC fellows at La Pena Gallery in Austin, February 11-27.

2016 – “People’s Gallery 2016 Exhibition” – Juried exhibition at City Hall in Austin, February 2016 through January 2017.  Two large works on canvas were selected.

2015 – “Artist INC” - Selected as a 2015 fellow in the Artist INC program presented by the City of Austin Cultural Arts Division focusing on professional development and business training for emerging and mid-career artists.

2014 – “East Austin Studio Tour” – Invitational exhibit at E4 Gallery in Austin, November 15-23.  Participated as a member of the Maker’s Dozen artist group.

2014 – “People’s Gallery 2014 Exhibition” – Juried exhibition at City Hall in Austin, February 2014 through January 2015. Three large works on canvas were selected.  Presented as a guest speaker in the Art After Six program.

2013-2014 – “Boardwalk” - Documentary work with The Trail Foundation of Austin chronicling the construction of the Boardwalk Trail at Lady Bird Lake.

2013 – “TPS 22, the International Competition” – Juried exhibition by the Texas Photographic Society presented at A. Smith Gallery in Johnson City, Texas, March 2013.  Awarded second place.

2009 to 2012 – “Radical Artistic Reinvention” – In which the artist transitions from a straight-up street photog to a photographic collage artist.

2006 to 2010 – “Blue Lapis Light” – Documentary work with Sally Jacques and the Blue Lapis Light aerial dance company.

2005 to 2014 – Participated in various commercial projects placing photographs and paintings in hotels, businesses, medical facilities and private collections.

2005 – “TPS 14, The National Competition” – Juried exhibition by the Texas Photographic Society.

2005 – “Unique Perspectives” – 2006 corporate calendar project commissioned by the City of Austin & Austin Energy.  Awarded a Bronze Quill Award by the International Association of Business Communicators.

2005 – “Spirit Echoes Fine Art Festival” – Juried fine art festival at Palmer Auditorium in Austin, July 9-10.  Awarded best of medium.

2004-2008 – Worked as a set photographer for several independently produced feature films, shorts and commercials.

2004 – “(In)Voluntary Separation, a thousand images of transformation” – Solo installation at the Design Center of Austin, March 4-25 containing over 1,000 photographs. 

2004 – “Spirit Echoes Fine Art Festival” – Juried fine art festival at the Crockett Center in Austin, July 10-11.

2004-2007 – “Blue Genie Art Bazaar” – Annual juried holiday festival produced by Blue Genie Art Industries.

2003 – “18th Annual Members Only Show” – Juried exhibition by the Texas Photographic Society presented at Chamizal National Memorial, El Paso, Texas, December 19 to January 31.

1991-2009 – “Daniel” – Second of two genetic collaborations exploring the core concepts of human sociology, nature vs nurture (with an emphasis on birth order), language development and physical and psychological identity throughout an 18-year cycle.

1988 – “1989 Book of Days” – Annual juried exhibition of black & white photography and publication of a 1989 appointment calendar.  Exhibit travels to five regional galleries.

1989 – “Chain Reaction” – Statewide juried exhibition, Austin Visual Arts Association, Austin, October 8-27.

1988-2006 – “Nicholas” – First of two genetic collaborations exploring the core concepts of human sociology, nature vs nurture, language development and physical and psychological identity throughout an 18-year cycle.

1988 – “TPS Members Only Show” – Juried exhibition by the Texas Photographic Society presented at Amdur Gallery in Austin.

1987 – “New Work by Thomas Athey” – Solo exhibition of sixteen recent oil paintings and thirty photographs at the Colorado Street Gallery in Austin, May 3 to June 28.

1987 – “Fourth Annual Photo Exhibition” – National juried exhibition, Phinney Center, Seattle, Washington, July 1-31.

1987 – “Positive/Negative III” – National juried exhibition at Slocumb Galleries, East Tennessee State University, January 3 to February 10.  Awarded second place.

1984 – “Third Coast Magazine” –  Series of black and white photographs selected for volume 4 of this oversized publication about contemporary Austin.

1984 – “Critical Thinking Skills” – Series of black and white photographs selected for educational books produced by Steck Vaughn publications.

1984-1987 – “Ontra” – Employed as the curator of a large corporate Latin American art collection.

1984 – “Austin Holographix” – Vice-President and Board of Directors member of a small startup company involved in the production and sale of holograms.
